Paper 1

About 60 years ago the white man was predigest against colored people. One man stood up against the white man, his name was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He preached to his fellow African Americans and opened their eyes to hope. Now in 2009 we have our first black president, Barack Obama. Could Obama be another Martin Luther King Jr?
Back in 1610 the first Africans were brought to America. The Africans were sold to white families as slaves. The slaves would sleep out in sheds on the property. They would work from dawn till dusk in the fields. Some would do chores for their mater in the house.
Most children were born into slavery and that is what they were labeled for life. To keep their slaves under their control the Negros weren’t allowed to learn to read or write. If someone were to teach the Negros they would receive a whipping as punishment. In the 50’s and 60’s the Negros ha to deal with not only predigest from the whites but, they also had top deal with segregation. Public places were separated in to “colored entrance only” and white entrance only.”
The Negros had separate churches and schools from the white men. If the Negros were to ride the bus they needed to sit in the back. If they were sitting up front and a white wanted their seat they had to give it up. In 1955 a boycott broke out in Montgomery when Rosa Parks was arrested. This boycott was Martin Luther King’s first big protest that launched him in to the nation’s conscience.
During rallies, protests and other gatherings the Negros would sing a folk song called “We Shall Overcome.” This song is a folk song that sings of the black man’s obstacles and strengths. In Martin Luther’s speeches he told the community that the protests must be done with out any physical violence. He tells them to have no bitterness or hate. He wants the Negros to have discipline and determination.
In April 1963 Martin Luther King was protesting in Birmingham, Al. He was arrested for the protest and in jail he wrote a letter to the clergymen. He explained to them what he was trying to accomplish. He explains the unjust laws and the need for non-violent action. In August of that same year Martin Luther gave his famous speech “I have a dream.”
In front of the Lincoln Memorial he spoke his inspirational words. This speech talked of his dream that one day the black and white people of America will be united and will be as brothers. This speech includes the words of freedom and change. He explains that the Negron will no longer have manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. He spoke of destiny and fate, that both races were intertwined together.
Then in 1968 before Martin Luther was assassinated he gave one last speech. “I’ve been to the mountaintop” was his last and he spoke of how everyone needs to stay united and keep their determination. He also spoke of going through time mentally starting in ancient Egypt. He watched the slaves go from the dungeons of Egypt to the Promised Land across the red sea.  The next place he soared off to was Greece and he said he saw the Parthenon.
Then he saw the heyday of the Roman Empire and the renaissance. Then he saw Martin Luther taking his 95 theses on the door of the church. He saw Lincoln sign the emancipation proclamation. The Negros were determined to live in god’s world. They wanted to be men and live like men.  Martin reminded them that nothing could bother them; they had faced the dogs of the police and their mace as well. They also conquered the fire hoses and shown everyone how strong their spirit was. Martin Luther told them of James Lawson and his struggle through life. Over time its self we have learned not to discriminate and to stop segregation. Whites eventually learned to get along with the blacks and made this nation better.
Then today in present times the countries first black president made a speech. “A More Perfect Union.” Obama speaks of the hardships that the blacks had to go through and how they stayed strong. He says that we need to come together and work towards a perfect union. Looking between what Martin Luther King and Obama they are similar in ways. One born of black parents and slavery he rose up and brought his people up towards hope and freedom.
He was looking for a perfect union where whites and blacks stood together as brothers. The other born in Kansas from a black father and a white mother, he looks to help this nation and unite us again so we can be strong. Obama is the strength this nation needs as he is the M.L.K of this century.
